Which verb do you want to use? Tomar, apanhar or tirar - Part II


Today, our post will focus on the verb apanhar because, like the verb tomar (the one we have talked before), it has several meanings. Please, let us pay attention to the following uses and examples.

APANHAR

Apanhar transportes públicos

Todos os dias eu apanho o metro para ir para o meu trabalho.

To take public transport

Every day I take the metro to go to work.

Apanhar uma doença

O Pedro apanhou uma constipação e, por isso, não vai à escola hoje.

To catch a disease

Pedro caught a cold and, for that reason, he is not going to school today.

Apanhar chuva/sol

Quando regressava a casa, apanhei tanta chuva que quase tive um acidente.

Eu adoro ir para a praia e apanhar sol todo o dia. É por isso que estou tão bronzeada!

To get caught in the rain/to sunbathe

When I was driving home I was caught in the rain so badly that I almost had an accident.

I love to go to the beach and sunbathe all day. That’s why I’m so tanned!

Apanhar frio/bom tempo

Na maioria das vezes, eles apanham frio à espera do autocarro.

Eles foram para as Caraíbas e tiveram muita sorte porque apanharam bom tempo todos os dias.

To stand in the cold/to get good weather

Most of the times, they have to stand in the cold waiting for the bus.

They went to the Caribbean and they were so lucky because they got good weather every single day.

Apanhar um voo

Nós não pudemos apanhar o voo a horas devido às condições meteorológicas.

To take a flight

We couldn’t take the flight on time because of the weather conditions.

Apanhar flores

A Sofia adora apanhar flores do jardim dela na Primavera.

To pick flowers

Sofia loves to pick flowers from her garden in spring.

Apanhar frutos

Quando eu era criança, costumava apanhar frutos na casa da minha avó. Ela tinha uma grande quinta.

To gather fruit

When I was a child I used to gather fruit in my grandmother’s house. She had a big farm.

Apanhar peixe

Um dos passatempos favoritos do meu pai é apanhar peixe.

To catch fish

One of my father’s favourite hobbies is to catch fish.

Apanhar algo do chão ou do ar

Por favor, apanha o lápis que deixaste cair.

Ele vai atirar-te a bola e tu tens de apanhá-la, está bem?

To pick (something) up from the ground or in the air

Please pick up the pencil you have dropped.

He is going to throw you the ball and you have to catch it, ok?

Apanhar trânsito

Quando vou para o centro da cidade, apanho sempre muito trânsito especialmente nos dias úteis.

To get stuck in traffic

When I go to the city centre, I always get stuck in traffic especially on working days.

Apanhar uma multa

O meu marido apanhou uma multa de 100€ porque passou um sinal vermelho.

To get fined

My husband got a 100€ fine because he ran a red light.

Apanhar uma pessoa

- A policía apanhou o ladrão?

- Sim, apanhou-o dentro da casa.

To catch a person

- Did the police catch the thief?

- Yes, he was caught inside the house.

Apanhar alguém desprevenido

O professor apanhou o estudante a copiar durante o teste.

Apanhar pessoa a + infinitivo

O professor apanhou o estudante completamente distraído durante a aula.

Apanhar pessoa a + adjetivo

To catch somebody off guard

The teacher caught the student cheating during the test.

The teacher caught the student completely distracted during the class.

Apanhar o cabelo

Eu prefiro apanhar o cabelo quando estou a praticar desporto.

To tie back (hair)

I prefer to tie my hair back when I’m doing sports.

Apanhar uma sova/tareia

O António apanhou uma sova do pai porque chegou a casa muito bêbedo.

To be beaten

António was beaten by his father because he arrived home very drunk.

Apanhar = entender, compreender, perceber

- Apanhaste tudo o que a professora está a dizer?

- Sim, apanhei tudo!

To catch = to understand (the sense, the meaning)

- Did you understand what the teacher is saying?

- Yes, I got it all.

Apanhar um susto

Vocês apanharam um susto quando eu gritei?

To get a fright

Did you get a fright when I screamed?

Did you know that this verb has so many different meanings? As you can see, you can use it a lot and in different situations. So, get ready to study and use them daily like the Portuguese do!
