Bairro Alto

Bairro Alto is a charming historic neighbourhood dating back to the 16th century, and has always been an area favoured by the city's artists and writers for its bohemian lifestyle. During the day it´s a quiet place where you can walk through the narrow picturesque streets and admire many traditional houses with their cute balconies. Some of them have been restored and are now hostels, restaurants, cafés, and Fado houses.

Leave the map in your pocket and lose yourself for a while! If you enjoy Bairro Alto during the day, it's worth another visit at night. With a very different atmosphere, you will find lots of bars that stay open until all hours, people of all ages standing outside drinking, talking, and dancing.

Interesting spots to visit: the Luís de Camões Square, the Garden of the Royal Prince (Jardim do Príncipe Real) and the café A Brasileira.

Interesting 'bairros' worth visiting: Alfama, Mouraria, São Vicente, Graça, and many more.
